The three gospels tell a story of a woman that anoints Jesus’ feet just days before his crucifixion and death. In the gospel of John, the woman is identified as Mary, sister of Lazarus. Her gift of a a precious perfume, worth a year’s wages, enrages Judas and prompts Jesus to utter one of the most uncharacteristic things Christ ever says: “Leave her alone… You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
